MXPRODUCT: KONA/DBM NUTRITION UPPED MY GAME!

By Michael James

Michael James here, now you might not know me but chances are if you are a motocross rider or racer and have read much in the past decade you have read something I have written. I covered National Arenacross racer and regional events for Cycle News, and MX East. I had a column for several years in MX East and did product reviews for several large companies: Boyesen Engineering; EVS Sports Protection; JB Grafix; The Rotater LLC, and KTM Sport motorcycles to name a few. I am a District level Amateur racer with a championship and race wins under my belt.

Like you, I am always seeking new and improved ways to improve my performance. Also like you I realize on track performance begin off the track with a dedicated training regime.

I have spent thousands over the past two decades of my motocross involvement and hundreds in my new found road cycling endeavors. I come across many products that claim to be the latest greatest and usually end up fairly disappointed. But once in a while, I also come across a product that does exactly what is advertised and surpasses my expectations. KONA/DBM Endurance supplements are such products.

While motocross racers are usually in very good shape, cyclists, even those who do not compete, are by necessity in excellent shape. I quickly found this out in the early stages of my cycling three years ago. A year into the cycling I met a fellow rider with some races under his belt. He looked to me like a Professional but he said he wasn’t. After riding with him I found the hard way that cyclists who are not in the upper echelons have much of the same speed as the guys you see on television, the difference being the Pros ride the same speed for over one hundred miles as opposed to 25-40 miles that most sportive riders and amateur racers ride.

Photo: Before Kona: 220 lbs.

After seeing way too much of this rider’s tush, I asked him how do I get stronger and faster like him. He laid out a training plan that seemed simple enough but insisted on a supplement regimen as well. Cyclists, tri-athletes and runners all have the knowledge that supplementation is primary key to extended endurance event performance. That’s when I stumbled on an ad for KONA supplements. I read that the founder, Darin Booten, was a pro tri-athlete himself. The science behind Kona, now named DBM Endurance, products seemed sound so I ponied up the money and sent it off. In a week I got the package and eagerly tried the first products.

DBM Endurance Pro and Citrabeta Shots come in human sized capsule form. The Endurance Pro supplement is basically three high potency ginseng roots from the high mountains of Tibet and similar places where the need to utilize oxygen is greater than at sea level. Endurance athletes above all others need to utilize oxygen more than anaerobic athletes. The Citrabeta Shots contain a product, citrulline maleate, which is clinically proven to increase endurance, reduce lactate acid (the enemy of all endurance athletes) and increase time to exhaustion.

On my first ride on the bicycle, I kept waiting for the products to “kick in.” It never happened; there was no energy drink type of rush followed by a hard crash in energy levels later on. What I did notice was that after a thirty mile ride, I didn’t feel the same way I normally felt. I wasn’t exhausted and ready to drop. I felt like I could’ve gone a few more miles. I passed it off as simply the power of suggestion. Post ride I also took the DBM Endurance Recovery power drink as prescribed and low and behold, the cramping and fatigued I normally felt the day after a ride of that distance and intensity was much reduced. Needless to say, several months into my KONA/DBM Nutrition use, I was getting faster and faster to the point where my racing buddy friend noticed the difference. I kept it to myself; even wanna-be racers want to have an edge.

Fast forward a year later and much suffering behind my UK friend, hills that would’ve tortured me in the beginning were now scalable and while I was not as fast as the racers, I was well faster than my old self. Looking back, the rapid rise in my fitness and speed was a direct result of the DBM Endurance products I had dutifully been using. I still kept it secret because now I was seeing verified results. The keys to the products effectiveness were the ability to adapt to the increased stresses I was putting my body through. The ginsengs I spoke of earlier in the medical world are called adaptogens. They allow the body to adapt to the workouts and nudge you closer to the next level. You cannot and will not want to work out hard day after day if your body is not adapting to the stresses. Steroids work in the same way by allowing rigorous workouts on a daily basis. DMB Endurance products are one hundred percent legal in all of the sport sanctioning body of cycling, track and field, triathlons and marathons.

Fast forward another year and my riding through the streets where I live had drivers in cars following me to see when I will get tired or slow down. Many have rolled up to me at traffic lights and asked, “Are you a professional, are you one of those guys on TV?” That’s a pretty cool compliment considering that I have not entered a road race at this point. While I feel I am now capable and strong enough to keep up with Cat 5 road racers, I will put that off until later in the year. The real gauge to me is seeing the faces of my UK buddy and the former champion racer who coaches him when they cannot drop me on anything short of a killer hill anymore. My typical speed on a flat roads now hovers between 22-26 miles per hour. That is close to Pro level cruising speed but as I said before, the Pros do it for over one hundred miles. I am able to do it for half of that before dropping off.

If it were up to me I would still keep the DBM Endurance secret weapon a total secret but some things work so good that you have to share them. It wouldn’t be sporting if I didn’t. Steve and Tony, aka “Obi Wan” and “Master Yoda,” have been very impressed lately and spare no opportunity to tell me I have come a very long way in a fairly short time. I owe a lot of this to a desire to ride as fast as I can and to DBM Endurance for allowing my forty-nine year old body to keep pace with my ‘twenty-nine’ year old ambitions.

DBM Endurance products are one hundred percent natural, safe and legal in the Tour de France as well. You don’t have to take my word for it; go the www.dbmnutrition.com to see a host of champion tri-athletes, factory sponsored Pro-Tour cyclists and world class marathon runners who all use and endorse DBM Endurance products. Since I started using the products, I have lost a total of twenty seven pounds and I am still going strong. DBM Endurance products can be found on the web and on Facebook if you are so inclined. For me this of one of those products I will be using for life and no, they didn’t pay me to write this.

Every episode of The Lucas Oil motocross nationals some pro or the other is showing you that cycling is a huge part of their training routine and if Pro cyclists are using this stuff, there is a reason for it. Get your stash and see for yourself, your results will thank you and make sure you have room in your den, you will need it for the extra trophies you’ll soon be winning.

First, let me say that I am a total convert to your products – love ‘em!! I raced Boston 6 wks ago for the first time (before I started with your products) and was super happy to PR by 14 mins and go sub 3:30 with a time of 3:28 (I am an ‘oldie’ mom of 3 – aged 41 now so very happy!)
Then I started using CitraBeta and took SUB 8 Fuel before a couple long bike rides and before I did the Calgary marathon yesterday – so just 6 wks after Boston, hillier course and at slight altitude and I PR’d again (3:24) and placed 3rd in my AG – 1st time ever I medalled – have always hovered around 8th-4th spot so to break onto the podium was AWESOME!!!

BEAUTY—we woke up this morning to sunshine and a partly cloudy sky! With comfortable temperatures and the “new” TransRockies start time of nine o’clock, things were downright pleasant after the last 24 hours of miserable weather. We rolled out of downtown Fernie on time and began a mellow climb that would last for 30km and ultimately gain 1000 vertical meters. While there were some steep sections, there was plenty of opportunity to get things sorted out.

Apparently the third place team in our category wanted to prove that they were here to win and made the top ahead of everyone else! We were a considerable distance back and came through the second checkpoint in second place just ahead of the leaders. After the aid station, we entered a rolling jeep road that was filled with HUGE puddles. Some of them were possible to ride around, but for the most part we were all getting thoroughly soaked and the rhythm Jon and I had enjoyed early in the climb seemed to vanish as we entered the single track near the top.

It was still slickened from the rain, and we lost contact with the group we had been riding with and soon were passed by some others before started the descent called Porky Blue. This is a freshly completed trail that plummets all the way back to the valley in a relatively continuous drop. There were some steep switchbacks and short ups, and for the most part is was a real gas!

Once we bottomed out, we spent the second half of the day on paved and gravel roads that rolled up and down about 150 vertical meters all the way to the finish in Sparwood, British Columbia, home of the “Worlds Largest Truck”—or so they say! Jon and I were able to make up some time on the big downhill and continued to ride well the rest of the stage, but were never able to re-connect with the category leaders and ended up third on the day. It was nice to stand on the podium again at TransRockies this evening and hopefully we will make it back again later in the week.

After the finish, we shuttled a short trip north to Elkford where we will start tomorrow’s stage. The venue here is awesome with a pool, library and shopping right on site. Tonight will also be my first in TR tent city so it will be interesting to see how effective the rest quotient is. The meals have been awesome and I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting some old friends from past races as well as new ones from all over the world. While the competition can be intense, it dissipates quickly as we collectively catch up on time gone by and the day’s ups and downs.

Cheers from Elkford,

Evan Plews

As of yesterday, DBM Nutrition has lowered all shipping costs to Canada. We have had situations where Canadians purchase heavier products such as DBM Endurance Super Recovery or DBM Endurance SUB 8 Fuel and the shipping costs were the same as items being shipped to New Zealand, and that’s not right. All orders shipped to Canada will now have the same shipping charges as if the order was being shipped within the USA. Please visit www.dbmnutrition.com to learn more about the DBM Endurance line of supplements.

We have changed our brand name from Kona Endurance to DBM Endurance, same exact products, just different lettering on the label. Here’s the inside scoop:
The name ‘Kona Endurance’ is somewhat special for me and always will be. Several years ago, as we were nearing the release date of our yet to be named products, it was time to come up with a name. I remember that I was training out in the north central IL farmlands on a freezing, rainy, November day. My mother had recently passed away and I’m in the middle of this crappy training ride, thinking about her, getting sad and having a miserable time. I remember saying to myself, “think about other things, put the hammer down and get home”. At that moment, I thought where is the complete opposite of where I am and “Kona” popped up and in an instant it came to me, Kona Endurance. Got home, shared the name idea with the rest of the R&D team and it was on!
Roughly a little over a year ago, the guy that owns Kona USA(Kona bikes) called me and said he didnt like us using the word ‘Kona’. I basically said, ‘that’s silly, you make bike parts and we make supplements.’ I left it at that and thought it was over. Last summer, on a Friday evening after we were gone for the day, we got a call from Kona USA but they left no message. I was curious as to what that was about. A week later they are suing us for trademark infringement and they wanted huge $$$$$$$$$$ from us. Everyone tells me how crazy this is and they have no shot. Mind you, we are a small R&D facility. We hire attorneys and I really think it’s no big deal and this will sqaushed in a second. Kona USA starts playing the game ‘give us all this money’…we come back, ‘no, you are not getting any money’…..then they say, ‘give us this much money then’…..and they keep playing this game and each time I have to pay lawyers to say no. I was getting nowhere. They went from asking for big $$$$ to asking for money back on products they bought. I laughed and thought how pathetic! Once they realized they were not getting any money from us, then they were bound and determined to make us stop using the word ‘Kona’. If a case actually makes it to federal trademark court, you will be spending at least a million dollars in legal fees, a freaking million dollars +. Even if we go all the way to federal trademark court, there is no guarantee that we would win, even though I am sure we would have, they make bike frames, we make nutrition products, I mean c’mon. I could not validate continuing to spend money on legal fees, its not fair to our employees, partners or the consumer. So, with that, we have changed our branding to DBM Endurance. While on one hand, I am flattered that Kona USA was so threatened by us, on the other, it repulses me. So, Goliath (aka Kona bikes) beat us down…oh, how I wish Kona Coffee would go after…….never mind! There it is, we’re moving forward, same exact products as always, we just changed 4 letters to 3 letters on the label. You will see some very cool things from the new DBM Endurance product line this year!

An email we received this morning:
Darren,
Just a letter to confirm the fact that DBM supplements work well. I have greater power output and faster better recovery. I don’t even feel it working, my body just answers ‘yes’ when I ask for more. Confirmation came for me on a 50 miler with Stevie UK, the Major Taylor Iron Rider’s best climber told me I have gotten stronger and that as of now I’d out climb most of them save the fast racers.
:-) That’s quite an honor since at 201 lbs I outweigh most of the climbers by 30-50 lbs.
Thanks for making a greater product than the rest.

All competitive triathletes swim, bike, and run more miles than they can keep track of, so what is the magic formula for getting faster as we get older? At 51, I am enjoying one of my best seasons ever, and the the difference is nutrition and the right supplements. DBM Endurance has sponsored me for the last three years, and my performances have steadily improved each season.
Since Eagleman 70.3 (4th in my age group, with a flat tire), I have place in the top 5 overall women in the last 5 races. In one weekend I participated in two sprint triathlons, placing 4th overall, 1st in Age Group, on Saturday, then placed second overall on Sunday out of 450 women. Two weeks later I placed third overall in a Half Lite (slightly longer than Olympic), and recently won the Quakerman Half Ironman Triathlon in PA, with a PR of 1 hr,32 minutes for the half marathon. It has been years since I have run that well, and I believe DBM Endurance has been the key difference for such improvement. If you are still questioning the validity and effectiveness of these products, don’t hesitate any longer!!!

Let me say that I could not be happier with the success of our NEW DBM Endurance SUB 8 Fuel. The feedback we get everyday from both pros and age-groupers is astounding. We sought out to create the world’s most potent endurance supplement, something that would help an athlete immediately notice the benefits. We have a saying here, “If you are not sure if its working, that means it’s not working.” You will KNOW DBM Endurance SUB 8 Fuel is working. My guy, pro triathlete Brian Lavelle went on SUB 8, in addition to DBM Endurance PRO and DBM Endurance Super Recovery….and he was completely blown away by the effects of SUB 8. While many “endurance supplements” are basic cookie cutter formulas, DBM Endurance SUB 8 is truly the first endurance shot soley designed to improve long distance cycling and running performance. Once you try it, you will keep using it….because you will set PRs!
